Desiree and I enjoyed the sunset at El Paraiso. As we lingered over brandy, Esteban appeared again.

“Don Carlos, your meeting with Don Francisco went well?”

I did not invite him to sit.

“Esteban, I do not wish to be rude in your employee’s presence, so I say this in English. My dealings with you are over. You did me a service and I paid you handsomely. I shall continue to enjoy Desiree’s company whenever I am in San Cristobal. If I need you again, I shall tell Desiree. If not, we need never meet again.”

He returned a blank stare.

“Good-bye, Esteban. As the Americans say, ‘Have a nice life.’”
